Creating Personal Connections Across Difference Through Science

Introducing my Inquiry Project

In my first inquiry, I sought to build students’ personal connections across difference in our butterfly expedition with the hopes of influencing student pride and interpersonal relationships.  We explored the butterfly as a symbol for empowerment and protest with direct parallels to human migration experiences, particularly in our community.  We also explored issues of representation of scientists across backgrounds.

I am a fifth generation black educator whose journey to the classroom began when my great-great-grandmother founded a schoolhouse in Jackson, Mississippi.  My passion and charge for education runs in my blood, and everyday I strive to honor my family members' legacies.   This Ethnic Studies project attracted my attention because I feel its critical to resist the tides of paternalism, low expectations, and identity erasure that characterized my and so many others' K-12 experiences.
